Louroz Mercader Calls on Province of Ontario for Fair Playing Field During World Cup

Re: Early Hours at Mississauga Bars for World Cup

Dear Mayor McCallion and Minister Fonseca:

I am writing on behalf of several business owners in the Cooksville Business District in seeking your support to enacting provincial legislation permitting Mississauga and other municipalities to extend alcohol-serving hours, which would allow patrons to drink licenced alcohol an hour earlier during next month’s World Cup matches.

As you are aware Toronto city council is allowing restaurants to start serving at 10 a.m. — an hour earlier than normal — from June 11 to July 11. The city of Toronto is the only city in the province that’s allowed to extend serving hours on its own; all other municipalities needs provincial permission.

I understand that a law allowing other municipalities to extend serving hours is on the books, but is to be enacted “on a day to be named by proclamation of the lieutenant-governor” — simply put, it’s up to the provincial cabinet to make a decision.

If it has not done so already, I am asking that City Council present and pass a motion at its next meeting for: the city of Mississauga to request that the province of Ontario make the necessary changes as soon as possible. To aid in drafting your motion, I understand that the City of Ottawa has passed a similar motion at its Council meeting held today.

The bottom line is that Mississauga establishments should not unfairly suffer a loss of customers and business to Toronto as a result of this provincial decision.

Many thanks in advance for your support,
